At Clearwater we maintain a strong belief in the strength and resilience of our clients and we are committed to providing the kind of high quality, empathic treatment that facilitates growth and development for clients of all ages and from all walks of life. While recognizing the profound commonality in our shared humanity, we also respect that everyone is unique, and that diversity is part of what makes us strong. We attempt to tailor our treatment approach to the needs of the individual, and we seek to match clients to the therapist and treatment approach that will best facilitate their growth and learning.

Our clinicians are trained in such diverse theoretical approaches as developmental psychology, attachment theory, psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and family systems theory. The staff providing DBT therapy have all been extensively trained through week-long intensive workshops in DBT theory and techniques, and they meet weekly in a DBT consultation team to encourage adherence to the highest DBT standards for professional care. All of the therapists at Clearwater have had extensive experience in providing therapy to traumatized clients, particularly victims of violent crimes.

What kinds of counseling
are offered at Clearwater ?

  • Adult Therapy: Adults seek treatment for a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, conflicts with significant others, work-related issues, and recovery from traumatic experiences. Brief and long-term psychotherapy are available.

  • Child Psychotherapy: Because children often use play and fantasy to integrate their experiences, we employ various modes of expressive play, such as sandtray, art therapy, puppets and doll play, as well as more structured interventions in therapy. We also communicate regularly with the child's parents or caregivers.

  • Adolescent Therapy: Adolescence is a time of rapid change, so psychotherapy with teens demands flexibility, tact, and patience. In order to be responsive to the teen and family's particular developmental needs, parental involvement in a teen's therapy is negotiated on an individual basis.

  • DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy): See our DBT Clinic page.

  • Victims of Crime Trauma Clinic: The Victims of Crime (VOC) program is a state and federally funded program that provides an array of free services to people who have been impacted by a violent crime. This program is available to people of any age or income level who have suffered physical assault, sexual abuse, intimate partner abuse (domestic violence), or the loss of family members through violence, as long as the crime has been documented by the police or Child Protective Services. Immediate family members usually qualify for this free service as well.

If you are found to be eligible for this program, Clearwater can provide 30 to 40 FREE individual psychotherapy sessions to you, and usually to your immediate family.

At this time, we are only accepting clients with an already approved claim. To submit an application, contact the Family Justice Center in Oakland, at 510-267-8800.

All services are paid for on a fee-for-service basis, except in our Victims of Crime Trauma Clinic, where therapy is free with an approved VOC claim. We do accept major credit cards.
